Horton Plains is one of the coolest destinations in Sri Lanka. The average annual temperature is approximately 14–16°C, although conditions can feel colder in the early morning, particularly when there is wind, rain or heavy mist.
Unlike coastal destinations such as Colombo, Galle and Mirissa, where temperatures are generally warm throughout the year, Horton Plains can feel surprisingly cold.

Horton Plains Rainfall & Climate
Horton Plains has a wet montane climate, with significantly more rainfall than many other parts of Sri Lanka.
The Central Province Tourism Department records more than 5,000 mm of annual rainfall at Horton Plains, compared with approximately 2,540 mm for the surrounding highlands.
Rain can occur at any time of year, and visitors should be prepared for sudden showers even when conditions appear dry when leaving Nuwara Eliya.
